Net Zero – the future of green building

The way we build homes is constantly evolving, particularly when it comes to energy efficiency.
All new homes in the GTA are built to the strict regulations set out by the Ontario Building Code, which is updated every five years. This significantly raises the bar when it comes to quality of construction and resource conservation.
BILD members not only meet these regulations, but often exceed them. According to Enerquality, 32 per cent of all homes built in Ontario in 2014 were Energy Star qualified, which means they are 20 per cent more energy efficient than what’s require by the building code.
As the bar is continuously raised, so are the expectations on our industry to build greener and better homes. A number of builders and developers are currently working on a concept called Net Zero – a home that produces as much energy as it needs.
BILD member Owens Corning Canada is currently working on a national Net Zero project, which involves a team of builders, consultants, industry partners and experts across the country. BILD members participating in the project include Mattamy Homes and Minto Communities.
