Minto opens net-zero model home at Arcadia in Kanata

Across the highway from Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata, something new is happening in suburban home building.
Minto has just opened model homes in its Arcadia community, among them an uber-energy-efficient single that in the past might only be found in a custom infill project or perhaps a house out in the country.
It’s a net-zero home, which means that in a given year, it will produce as much energy as it uses. It’s the first time such a home has been offered to the average buyer in the suburbs.
Best part is it looks almost exactly like a regular home, and that’s the whole point of building it, says Derek Hickson, Minto’s manager of innovation.
